Patching-up time.

I am very proud of myself for finishing this page today, because today was also for cleaning, grocery shopping, and cooking in preparation for my baby’s FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY. Where did this year go? Anyway, she’s the best and tomorrow she gets to try chocolate cake.

The full page is below, and it does contain some blood, as expected, and some medical stuff (stitches, evidence of long-term hunger), if that bothers you.

Resunotek has found something in the woods.

A little blood on this page, but honestly not too bad, considering what we’ve already dealt with.

Just this page for this week, because Friday is May Day and there are a number of strikes occurring, so this is my small way of showing solidarity. I’ll have a new one up for you next Tuesday.

Also, I’ll be at What the Hex on Sunday! 11-5 at Dresden Castle on Underwood, Cudahy, WI. Come say hi!

Some blood and violence on this page. I seem to introduce groups of men only to kill them all off shortly after.

Song of the Week

Heidi Talbot, “Bedlam Boys” (traditional)

This song originates from when Bedlam House (and its counterpart, Maudlin House, for women patients) was a thing, and it serves as a reminder that 1) the Renaissance was really, really weird and 2) mental healthcare has come so far!

I had a lovely time at the Kenosha Book Festival yesterday! It was a bit chilly, but the rain stayed away, and lots of people came out. I learned my lesson to dress in layers at the very first one I attended in April of 2024. If you missed it, there will be more–one a month from now through September, plus Bookoween in October–but I will be elsewhere.

Speaking of, I’ll be at What the Hex: The Magician this Sunday! 11-5 at Dresden Castle on Underwood, Cudahy, WI. I’m excited to rejoin Brooke and all the other magical artists and vendors. Here’s the Facebook event, if that’s helpful.

I’ll have a new page of Last Watch Before Dawn for you tomorrow. Friday is May Day, and it’ll be quiet around here in solidarity with various May Day actions taking place across the country. After that, we should be back on our regular schedule for the foreseeable future (which, to be fair, is not all that far these days).

Also, newsletter this week! It’ll be out on Thursday. If you want updates delivered to your inbox along with pictures of my cats, you can put your email into the box at this link. Be sure to check for a confirmation email afterward.

A couple of petitions:

Via Oxfam: Prioritize Gaza’s recovery

Via Kids In Need of Defense: Investigate indefinite detention of unaccompanied minors

Via Just Foreign Policy: Support the Lebanon war powers resolution

That’s what I’ve got for today. More soon! Take care of yourselves this week.

Our heroine is in Peril again.

I managed to cut two entire panels out of this page, mostly because my outline has the bandit leader drawing his sword like three or four times? He doesn’t even have a scabbard. I don’t know what I was thinking. (Probably not much, because I’m pretty sure I was working on this bit either shortly before or after giving birth.)

Also, don’t forget about the Kenosha Book Festival this weekend! 10-3 at 5031 7th Ave, Kenosha, WI. See you there!

Warning for said peril, though it is short-lived, and some more blood.

Ya boy is back, and he’s doing…not great, but he’s still kicking.

Thanks for your patience during the brief hiatus. I should be back on time on Friday as well.

Just some blood on this page. Find the whole thing below:

Hi. I realize it’s Wednesday, and this page is a full day late. I was perfectly well set up to get it done yesterday when I got an email that it was time to reapply for my baby’s health insurance. I figured I’d do it and not have to think about it later. Turns out, the application doesn’t save if you log out partway through! It took three attempts, plus another two attempts to upload FOURTEEN proof documents, and two entire hours I was planning on using for drawing and formatting text.

Then the storms hit and my husband almost got stranded at a very important meeting for very important people who did not take the tornado and flood warnings seriously.

We are all okay, the application is done, and here is the page. Now that I’m behind, I’m going to try to get the next page out on Friday, but I may have to cut my losses and bump it to the following Tuesday. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Full page is below! Warning for implied and direct threats of violence.

We’re still in the mistlands for a bit, so have some uncanny flora and fauna!

Because all my readers are unusually smart and perceptive, I’m taking the approach of not using text to explain pretty much any of the worldbuilding. I think the journey of discovery will be a fun challenge for all of us.

This was going to be just one of six or seven panels, but I decided it needed some room. Enjoy a weird landscape as we start this new chapter.
