Last Watch Before Dawn: Volume 1, Page 57

Thumbnail of Panel 6, described below.

A little late, but it’s still Tuesday, so here we are!

I’m having so much fun with expressions and body language. There’s so much to show! I wouldn’t claim to be good at it (I’m not that good at body language in real life, much less drawing. I voluntarily wore a mask longer than I was required to when I was a barista in 2020/2021 because it meant I didn’t have to worry about what customers thought about my thinking face).

Also, I don’t know what the light’s doing, I’ll fix it next draft.

Image description:

An eight-panel, black-and-white comic strip.

Panel 1: Resunotek’s face as she ducks her head and lowers her eyes.

Resunotek: And me, I guess.

Panel 2: Ichiro sits with his legs folded under the blanket and his hands in his lap. He also lowers his eyes, asking the question partly to Resunotek and partly to himself.

Ichiro: What are you going to do now?

Panel 3: We see Resunotek stick her head out of the tent from the outside, pulling back the canvas with one hand and looking out into the gray day.

Resunotek: I have to go to the southern temple. On Ryujima.

Panel 4: Ichiro sits in partial darkness, a wedge of light falling across his face. He looks, rather normally for him, quite dejected.

Ichiro: That’s a long way.

Panel 5: Back inside the tent, Resunotek puts the caterpillar egg back in her basket. The egg is rendered in translucent green, the only color on the page.

Resunotek: It is. But I’ll worry about that tomorrow.

Panel 6: Both of them, seen from about the waist up. Resunotek reaches across the space for Ichiro’s forehead, which surprises and distresses him. His eyes are wide, and he leans away, starting to raise one arm in self-defense.

Panel 7: Ichiro’s face, still confused and mildly consternated. Resunotek’s palm rests on his brow.

Panel 8: Resunotek returns to her basket, reaching inside with both hands.

Resunotek: Your fever’s coming back. You should rest. I’ll make you some more medicine.
