Last Watch Before Dawn: Volume 1, Page 63

Thumbnail of Panel 3, described below

This page and the next one were originally one rather crowded page. I decided to split it up to give these thoughts some more room.

To that end, I also didn’t put in any backgrounds to speak of on this page. If it ends up being too empty or too confusing, I will add some in on the next draft.

Image description:

A four-panel, black-and-white comic page.

Panel 1: Resunotek sits cross-legged, the handle of the cooking pot visible in front of her. She was shaping some of the cooked grain into a dumpling, but has stopped to wave a hand in Ichiro’s direction, a concerned look on her face. He’s still on his knees, but has lifted his head, one arm around his torso and the other supporting his weight.

Resunotek: Stop that. You’ll hurt yourself.
(Narrating): The only other choice is to let him die.

Panel 2: She stands behind Ichiro, most of her body out of frame, and drapes the blanket over his shoulders. He looks up, a bewildered look on his face. He is framed from the shoulders up, and we can see Resunotek’s hands, the hems of her sleeves, and the sash around her waist, but not much else.

Resunotek (narrating): And then probably die on the road, myself.

Panel 3: We see Resunotek from the shoulders up, putting on her straw cloak and pulling the ties at the neck closed. Her head is lowered, her eyes closed.

Resunotek (narrating): Am I making a terrible mistake?

Panel 4: The pair of them, eating their dumplings side by side, Resunotek in the straw cloak and Ichiro wrapped in the blanket.

Resunotek (narrating): The abbess remembers–remembered–when the samurai came to Moshiri.
