Last Watch Before Dawn: Volume 1, Page 66

Thumbnail of Panel 1, described below.

Find someone who looks at you the way Resunotek looks at weird bugs.

There’s a little voice in Ichiro’s head that says, “Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to look strong all the time? To enjoy looking at weird bugs? To let someone take care of you?”

He’s doing his best not to listen to it.

A seven-panel, black-and-white comic page.

Panel 1: We see both Ichiro and Resunotek from the shoulders up, Ichiro having bent down to her level. Resunotek continues to watch the mechanical bug, while Ichiro looks at her with an uncharacteristic softness to his face.

Panel 2: Resunotek stands up and stretches her arms. Ichiro, still crouching on the ground, looks up at her.

Resunotek: How far until the village?

Panel 3: Both of their faces, Ichiro having stood up as well. He still looks a little enamored.

Ichiro: Half a day, maybe.

Resunotek: Do you need a rest?

Panel 4: Ichiro looks away, a bit of a scowl on his face.

Ichiro: I can keep going.

Panel 5: Resunotek rolls her eyes.

Panel 6: Seen from the waist up, Resunotek puts her hands under the straps of her backpack.

Resunotek: I’m going to rest.

Panel 7: She sits down on a great fallen tree, her pack off and placed between her legs. The basket is open. She holds out a rice ball with one hand.

  1. Some songs do more than play music. They unlock memories that have been quietly waiting for years, bringing back old friendships, school hallways, late night conversations, and moments that once felt like they would last forever.

For a few minutes, you are not listening as the person you are today. You are listening as the girl who sang every lyric without hesitation, dreamed without limits, and believed the future was still waiting just around the corner.

The emotions return before the memories even have time to form. A smile appears unexpectedly, and suddenly the years between then and now feel much shorter than they really are.

Music has a remarkable way of preserving parts of ourselves that time never truly takes away. Sometimes all it takes is one familiar song to remind you exactly who you were and how far you have come since then
