Last Watch Before Dawn: Volume 1, Page 44

Thumbnail of Panel 6, described below.

Hi. I realize it’s Wednesday, and this page is a full day late. I was perfectly well set up to get it done yesterday when I got an email that it was time to reapply for my baby’s health insurance. I figured I’d do it and not have to think about it later. Turns out, the application doesn’t save if you log out partway through! It took three attempts, plus another two attempts to upload FOURTEEN proof documents, and two entire hours I was planning on using for drawing and formatting text.

Then the storms hit and my husband almost got stranded at a very important meeting for very important people who did not take the tornado and flood warnings seriously.

We are all okay, the application is done, and here is the page. Now that I’m behind, I’m going to try to get the next page out on Friday, but I may have to cut my losses and bump it to the following Tuesday. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Full page is below! Warning for implied and direct threats of violence.

Image description:

A seven-panel, black-and-white comic page.

Panel 1: From above, and at a great distance, the tiny figures of the three men approach the tiny figure of Resunotek. In addition to her basket, she now has the rolled-up tent and the cooking pot on her back. Their shadows are tall, indicating late afternoon, with the sun coming from the west (the right of the panel). The man on the left has a spear, the one in the center has a sword over his shoulder, and the one on the right has his arms crossed.

Panel 2: Two of the men, shown from the shoulders up. The man with the sword, evidently the leader, smirks. His companion with the short hair glances back at him with a questioning look.

First man: Looks like a little bug has flown across the valley.

Panel 3: The leader and the other man, the older one with a gruff demeanor, at a slightly greater distance. The leader continues to smirk.

Third man: A cultist from the north island.

Panel 4: Back to Resunotek, one hand under her cloak and the other thrown out wide. Her expression can’t be seen, due to her mask and cloak, but her stiff posture indicates fear.

First man (off-panel): They’re all girls, you know.

Third man (off-panel): Ugly girls.

Panel 5: The second man, waist up, resting the butt of his spear on the ground. It is a hunting spear with hooked wings and a chip out of the head. He twists his mouth into a dubious expression.

Second man: Do they have money?
What about food?

Panel 6: All three men, bringing their weapons to bear. The third man has a long, curved knife. The first man is a bit behind the others as they move in to surround Resunotek.

First man: Hold still, little bug.

Panel 7: Resunotek has drawn her knife, and she holds it out in front of her with both hands. She has taken two steps backward, dragging her feet through the snow, which piles up at her heels. The shine on the bug eyes of her mask gives it a look of terror.
