Last Watch Before Dawn: Volume 1, Page 42

We’re still in the mistlands for a bit, so have some uncanny flora and fauna!

Because all my readers are unusually smart and perceptive, I’m taking the approach of not using text to explain pretty much any of the worldbuilding. I think the journey of discovery will be a fun challenge for all of us.

Image description:

A six-panel, mostly black-and-white comic page.

Panel 1: We see Resunotek, in her straw cloak and bug-eyed hood, standing in front of two tall, thin valley dwellers in cloth hats and smiling masks. One carries a stack of folded cloth in her hands and wears a pack with an external frame, to which a lantern is affixed. The other holds up one of the plants Resunotek gathered before, a spindly thing with a large taproot. Looming overhead are the shapes of two enormous mushrooms. The ground is shrouded in fog.

Panel 2: Resunotek climbs the ridge again. We see her booted feet on the rock. Below, on the side of the ridge, two clockwork stag beetles move in the same direction, one behind the other. Their wings are affixed to their bodies by gears, their pincers are metallic and bladed, and their legs are hinged. A network of green filaments covers each of their bodies.

Panel 3: Later, Resunotek has set up camp. She sits beside a small, simple tent and a fire in a ring of stones. She has removed one boot and holds it upside down; a single pebble drops from out of it.

Panel 4: A closer shot of Resunotek in her hood. She lifts one side of it with one hand, setting the eye on that side askew; in her other hand is a piece of what might be jerky with a bite out of it.

Panel 5: She opens her basket and checks inside. We see the basket from the top, and one of her mittened hands holds it by the edge. Inside are more of the plants with the thick roots, a patch of moss, a handful of small mushrooms threaded on a string, triangular slices of giant mushrooms with gills, a piece of some other fungus filled with holes, some grasses, and the caterpillar egg, rendered in green with the embryonic caterpillar inside faintly visible.

Panel 6: With her arms around the basket, she lies on her side and goes to sleep. She is inside her tent, and a thin wedge of light comes in through the flaps.
