Image description:

A five-panel, black-and-white comic page.

Panel 1: Resunotek stands in front of the wall of caterpillar eggs, turned 3/4 away from the viewer. She hangs the round paper lantern on the wall toward her left. The eggs are tinted green wherever they appear; this is the only color on the page.

Caption: When the snows come, they weave their cocoons and leave your care.

Panel 2: Facing the viewer, she holds an egg in two hands, examining it with a slight smile.

Caption: And when the snow melts and the valley bells bloom, the new eggs will hatch…

Panel 3: From behind again, she reaches up to place her hand on an egg shelved above her head.

Caption: …and the men will come from the villages looking for brides.

Panel 4: A large panel, taking up nearly half the page. Taking up the lantern again, Resunotek crouches beside the shelving, looking underneath it. This is where she sleeps; there is a thin mattress and a blanket, an extra black kimono folded up, and a pair of mittens resting on top of the bed. One mitten has a threaded needle stuck through the fabric. She’s turned 3/4 away to the right this time.

Caption: Five years have passed since you came of age, and nothing has changed.

They look so young, now, the farmers’ sons.

Panel 5: A small panel, set in the bottom right corner. Facing the viewer and with her back to the room’s huge door, which is open a crack to let in a beam of light and a swirl of snow, Resunotek puts the mittens on, her head bowed. She is in shadow; the lamp has been put out.

Caption: But if you left, who would look after the caterpillars?
