Song of the Week

Tori Amos, “Black-Dove (January)”

Good morning!

Please send good vibes/prayers/etc. for the Covid test I’m taking later today. I was still positive on Thursday. I haven’t left the house in almost two weeks, and I’m very sad.

I’ll have a new chapter of Journey to the Water on Patreon tomorrow, and last week’s chapter will be up here on Wednesday. I’m still deciding what I’m going to do about the newsletter and a possible paid domain, so I’ll let you know when there are any updates on that.

A couple more petitions. I get them in my email, and they’re thinning out, which concerns me.

Via Rashida Tlaib: Halt weapons exports to Israel

Via Just Foreign Policy: Cease military aid to Israel & protect lives

Via People Power United: Starvation should not be used as a weapon

I appreciate you and I hope you’re staying healthy. Have an excellent week.

No newsletter this month

I am working on getting the newsletter back on track, but for now, I’m unable to send it. Google and Yahoo have changed their policies, making it more likely that emails sent from free accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) will end up in a spam trap. MailerLite has made the decision to ban free email accounts from sending emails with their service. I thought I had managed a workaround by using the account the university gave me back in the day, but that is no longer viable. I have to 1) purchase a domain, 2) use that domain to get a new email address, and 3) register and verify all this with MailerLite. At this point, I’m reluctant to add another recurring charge to my budget, but it looks like I’m being forced to do so in order to keep the newsletter running. Prevailing wisdom says that authors need to have a newsletter. Who am I to argue?

In any case, I’m not going to be able to get this sorted out before the month ends in…fifteen hours? So I’ll skip this month and hopefully have a newsletter to send at the end of March. Thank you so much for your patience! In the meantime, MailerLite is maintaining the subscriber list, so you won’t need to sign up again.

If you’d like to help out with operational costs, and are able to do so, I have a Patreon and a Ko-fi. You can also buy one or more of my books! In any case, I appreciate you.

Enya, “May It Be”

My husband and I are almost done with our annual Lord of the Rings rewatch, so here’s a song for you. (Fun fact: “May It Be” is also super easy to play on the piano, even if you haven’t touched a keyboard in years.)

Preorders of The Book of the New Moon Door are open through Friday, December 1! I’ll be closing them first thing Saturday morning, so if you want an autographed copy and some bonus bookmarks & stickers, be sure to order this week. You can find the link to the shop, and the first chapter of the published version, under the Buy My Books tab above (under the Menu if you’re on mobile), or you can click here and save yourself a step.

I’ll be sending the newsletter out tomorrow, which is earlier than usual, so that newsletter subscribers who don’t also read here have a chance to get a preorder. If you’re not subscribed and would like one email a month that does contain cat pictures, you can put your email into the box at this link.

The last two chapters of the serial version of The Book of the New Moon Door will be up on Patreon tomorrow, and last week’s chapter will be here on the blog on Wednesday. I appreciate everyone who’s been along for this journey!

There has been a temporary pause to the violence in Gaza, but a permanent ceasefire is needed to save civilian lives and ensure hostages are returned. Keep pressuring your representatives! Here’s Amnesty International’s petition.

I think that’s it for this week. Thanks for being here.

Al Stewart, “Roads to Moscow”

Good morning and happy Monday! Here’s a little historical journey for you.

The newsletter goes out tomorrow at noon my time (US Central). If you aren’t on the mailing list and would like to be, put your email in the box at this link. Don’t forget to check your inbox for a confirmation! (I’ve tried to embed this form, but MailerLite and WordPress don’t play nice together.)

There will be a new chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door on Patreon tomorrow, and last week’s chapter will be up here to read for free on Wednesday. Part Three is undergoing the most changes as I work on rewrites, and I hope you enjoy both versions.

I plan to open preorders for the third and final time (with the fancy packaging and everything) the week of November 20. I’ll keep you updated as my files get approved and I can start ordering.

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Mourning Ritual, “Bad Moon Rising” (Creedence Clearwater Revival cover)

Good morning!

I had a lovely time at What the Hex yesterday! Hello to everyone I met there. If you signed up for the newsletter, check your inbox for a confirmation email! MailerLite really wants you to consent before it adds you to the mailing list.

That’s going to be my last event of the year, and now I’m focusing on getting The Book of the New Moon Door published and into your hands. If you’re keeping up with the serial version, there will be a new chapter on Patreon tomorrow, and last week’s chapter will be here on the website to read for free on Wednesday.

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

The Tallest Man on Earth, “The Sparrow and the Medicine”

Hello! It’s Monday again.

The What the Hex Autumn Witches’ Market is this Sunday! Brooke and I will be at Dresden Castle in Cudahy, WI, and doors open at noon. Admission is free! Here’s a link to the Facebook event for more details.

This market will be the second opportunity to preorder The Book of the New Moon Door. The third and final opportunity will be on this website in late November. More on that next month.

Also, if you signed up for the newsletter, be sure you check your email for the confirmation! You won’t be added to the list unless the mailer program is very sure you consent.

I am still deep in rewrites, so please enjoy a new chapter on Patreon tomorrow and last week’s chapter here on Wednesday.

Have an excellent week!

Must Be the Season of the Witch (October events)

Brooke and I are attending two markets next month!

The first is Bitchcraft Fair, which will take place Sunday, October 8 at the Wisconsin Center. Tickets are $12 in advance ($15 for the VIP skip-the-line experience) and $15 the day of–more here. In addition to shopping, this market offers trick-or-treating, a photobooth for your Halloween costumes (one picture is included!), and magical workshops! Doors open at noon and close at six.

The second is What the Hex Witches’ Market (Autumn Edition) on Sunday, October 22 at Dresden Castle on Underwood. Admission is free, and the workshops are magical and very affordable. There will also be live music and drag performers! Similarly, doors open at noon and close at six.

Brooke has a ton of new cards, and I’ll be opening preorders for The Book of the New Moon Door (more info on that here). We hope to see you at one or both markets!

P.S. I forgot to mention that the newsletter is going out tomorrow, so if you’d like to get in on that, put your email in the box at this link.

The Black Keys, “Have Love, Will Travel” (Richard Berry cover)

Good morning!

The newsletter is going out at noon my time (US Central Daylight), so if you haven’t signed up yet and want event news and additional cat pictures, be sure to sign up here before then. (It’s supposed to be an embedded form, but WordPress and MailerLite aren’t getting along.)

August is going to be the month of rewriting The Book of the New Moon Door, so I’ll be getting ready for that today and starting this week. In the meantime, there will be a new chapter on Patreon for your reading enjoyment tomorrow, and the latest chapter of Journey to the Water will be up here on Wednesday. New Moon Door may take all of my waking hours this month, but I’m planning to stay on top of the alternating posting schedule. I’ll let you know if that changes.

Also, please wish Brooke safe travels today, as she’s heading back from Witch City Tarot in Salem!

Thanks for being here! Have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

PHILDEL, “Strange Ships”

Good morning!

I have finished the Great Reread of The Book of the New Moon Door! I’ll be spending this week taking notes, filling plot holes, and otherwise preparing for the Great Rewrite, which I hope to complete over the month of August.

In the meantime, there will be a new chapter of Journey to the Water on Patreon sometime on Tuesday, and the latest chapter of New Moon Door will be up here on Wednesday. The July edition of the newsletter will be going out next Monday, so if you haven’t signed up and would like some garden and cat pictures, here’s a link.

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

Talking Heads, “Take Me to the River” (Al Green cover)

I don’t think I’ve posted this version yet!

So, What the Hex Summer Witches’ Market was a delight, but something terrible has happened:

A miniature legal pad, wrinkled with water damage. The words "newsletter signup" are barely legible in pink, with blurred bands of pink and blue ink beneath them.

My newsletter signup sheet got wet on the way home and is completely illegible. If you signed up and happen to see this, you can put your email into the box at this link and it will send you a confirmation! I’m so sorry for the inconvenience.

I’ll be finishing up the Great Reread of The Book of the New Moon Door this week, and there will be a new chapter on Patreon tomorrow. There will also be a new chapter of Journey to the Water here on Wednesday.

Thanks for being here! Have an excellent week, and stop by again soon.
