Song of the Week

The Decemberists, “Won’t Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga)”

Good morning!

This week, I’ll be finishing up Episode Three of The Well Below the Valley and working on an outline/script for the first issue of the comic, which now has a title: Chrysanthemum Dawn. In case you missed it, Episode Two of The Well can now be read for free here.

My first event of the year will be Saturday, February 22: the Spooky Frog Horrifying Book Fair! I’ll be amongst an eclectic collection of other horror authors and spooky artists at The Factory, 1120 S Barclay St, Milwaukee. Admission is only $3, and the event runs from noon until 5.

Also, you can find my books on the shelves at Storykeepers Books in West Allis! I’ll be there for a talk in March, so I’ll have more information about that later. I’m very excited to be working with another independent book store.

I am incredibly overwhelmed with everything that has been happening, but here’s something I can do:

Via Demand Progress: Block funding for the deporation machine

Via the American Friends Service Committee: Stop deportations now

Via Rep. Rashida Tlaib: Demand Palestinian self-determination and liberation

Via Action Network: Defend birthright citizenship

Via the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights: Hands off Palestine

The petitions I share are based on the roughly 200 emails I receive every day, and all the important issues are not covered (e.g., I’m very concerned with the stripping of rights from our trans friends and siblings). If you have some helpful things to share, please do!

Okay. That’s all for today. I love you, thanks for being here, be gentle with yourself and others this week.

The Decemberists, “O Valencia!”

Good morning!

I am almost done with the Great Rewrite! This week, I’ll be finishing up my new draft of The Book of the New Moon Door, doing some final edits, and getting everything formatted with IngramSpark. My beta readers have been hard at work, and Brooke (of the Figuratively Speaking Tarot) has painted me a cover, and I’m so excited to show it to you.

A rough schedule for this week:

There will be a new chapter on Patreon tomorrow, and last week’s chapter will be here for free reading on Wednesday. We are racing toward the end! Just as a reminder, the published version will have some significant differences from the serial version, including a different ending. I hope you enjoy both versions.

On Friday, I’ll stop back in for an update on the publishing process.

The cover reveal will be on Monday, November 20, which is also when I’ll open up preorders for the third and final time.

Thanks for being here! Have an excellent week.

Also, our pressure on Congress and the Biden administration is working: keep calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Saving lives is the most important thing.

The Decemberists, “The Crane Wife 3”

Welcome back! It’s Monday again.

This week, I’ll have the next chapter of Journey to the Water up on Patreon. I’m also doing my first Patreon livestream on Saturday, November 13! I’ll be talking about vampire lore from around the real world and the World of Darkness RPG system with a good friend who is a World of Darkness expert. If you want to get in on either of those things, my Patreon is only $3 a month.

I am still committed to keeping blog content free, so Journey to the Water chapter IV will be up here on the website next week.

I’m also participating in National Novel Writing Month this year, and it’s…going. I’m working on a new, improved draft of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea so that it can become a Real Book that you can hold in your hands or on your e-reader, hopefully before Christmas. I’ll post an update later this week!

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Song of the Week: Double Feature

Kate Rusby, “Annan Waters”

The Decemberists, “Annan Water”

Happy Monday! Please enjoy these two versions of this Border ballad, one traditional and one less so. Fun fact: I named the first chapter of my undergraduate thesis “The Hazards of Love.” Medieval courtly love can be very hazardous, especially with all those eye-beams flying around.

I’ll be back later this week (hopefully Wednesday) with the next chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door. Berend and Isabel will have to locate and deal with a crime lord in order to find the murderer, so don’t miss it!

May you stay safe and warm this week and this season.
