Year in Review, Part the First

As is tradition around here, I have gathered all the Songs of the Week for 2024 into a single playlist (making sure that they’re all included, because sometimes I forget to add them and sometimes YouTube eats them). Enjoy!

The last bit of holiday travel has impacted my schedule, as you can tell from this post coming out on Tuesday rather than Monday. I’ll have the second part of the Year in Review up tomorrow, and the newsletter will also go out tomorrow. If you aren’t signed up for the newsletter and would like to be, put your email in the box at this link, and then check your inbox for a confirmation.

Thanks for being here. I hope 2025 treats you well.

Song of the Week

Regina Spektor, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (Beatles cover, from Kubo and the Two Strings)

Good morning!

In case you missed it, Journey to the Water is now out in the world! You can find it wherever books are sold, or visit the “Buy my books” page to save yourself a few clicks. You can also read the first chapter as a preview if you’re on the fence.

Also, today is the LAST DAY to get 20% off the paperback of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea through this link.

I’m taking off for holiday festivities, so I’ll be back next week with the traditional Year in Review posts. I hope you have a nice, cozy week, and whatever holidays you celebrate are gentle to you.

A couple of petitions for this week:

Via Civic Shout: Reunite separated migrant families

Via Amnesty International: End genocide in Gaza

Via Win Without War: Immigrants are our neighbors, not our enemies

Thanks for being here!

Stromae, Pomme: “Ma Meilleure Ennemie” (from Arcane)

It’s Monday! First up: Journey to the Water releases on Friday! That’s four days from now!

If you haven’t yet picked up your own copy of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea, you can get the paperback for 20% off (and pay your writer a little bit more) at this link. The sale is on through the 23rd (next Monday).

I’ve said it before, but it can’t be said enough: I appreciate your patience as I’ve been working to get this book out. I hope it’s worth all the waiting.

Also, if you Kickstarted the Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot and you haven’t received your deck, please reach out to Brooke via Kickstarter. A few folks still haven’t confirmed their shipping addresses.

Petitions I’ve gathered for this week:

Via Our Revolution: Call for a ceasefire now (link now fixed!)

Via Ekō: Suspend the EU Israel Association Agreement for human rights violations

Via USCPR: Stop the forced famine in Gaza

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

KALEO, “Broken Bones”

Good morning!

First things first: Journey to the Water comes out in eleven days! You can check out the cover, back-of-the-book blurb, and first chapter under the “Buy my books” tab above (under the Menu if you’re on mobile). After I’m done writing this, I’ll make sure the sidebar is updated as well.

I’ll mostly be counting down to release day until it happens (December 20), but afterward, I’ll be talking about new projects and things going on with me. This will also include why this book took so very long. In the meantime, please get hyped with me for the release!

Here are some petitions I’ve gathered since last time:

Via Amnesty International: End genocide in Gaza

Via Mercy Corps: Protect civilian lives amid conflict and crisis

Via Ekō: Tell Chevron CEO to stop fueling genocide

Via Our Revolution: Tell President Biden and Congress to stop enabling Israel’s wars

Have an excellent week and stay warm (or cool, I have an occasional visitor from the other hemisphere) this week. May we all one day be free.

Song of the Week

Joe Hisaishi, “Ashitaka and San” (from Princess Mononoke)

Good morning! I hope you had a relaxing weekend, whether it was a holiday for you or not.

If you were expecting the newsletter on the 30th and did not find it in your inbox, do not worry! Due to some poor planning on my part, I haven’t sent it out yet. I got distracted with cooking and also eating. It will be out later today. If you’re not signed up and you’d like to be, put your email address in the box at this link. Be sure to look for the confirmation email afterward.

In case you missed it, you can now take a look at the cover for Journey to the Water. I’m about halfway through my edits and hope to finish them all by the end of the week. The book will release December 20, so be sure to mark your calendars! Also, if you haven’t yet, be sure to visit the “Buy my books” tab above (under the Menu if you’re on mobile) and get your own copy of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea before the sequel comes out.

For this week, I’ll have the first (edited and shiny) chapter of Journey up here on Wednesday for your perusal, and I’ll stop back on Friday with an update on the publishing process.

Also, all the Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot packages are in the mail and will be arriving soon!

Some petitions:

Via Rep. Rashida Tlaib: Support Palestine’s UN proposal

Via Jewish Voice for Peace: No more weapons to Israel

As always, thanks for being here. Have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

Keane, “Atlantic”

Good morning!

First, good news: if you Kickstarted the Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot Deck, your deck is packed up and ready to be shipped! It should be on its way shortly. There are a few people who haven’t filled out a shipping address yet, so if that’s you, be sure you do that so you can get your deck and other goodies.

In case you missed it, Journey to the Water releases December 20! I can’t restate enough times how grateful I am for your patience. I’ll be working on formatting and edits for the next couple of weeks, and then I’ll have to wait for IngramSpark to approve all my files. I’ll do a cover reveal on Wednesday, so be sure to stop back! You can also follow me on Instagram or Facebook (or both).

Petitions this week, if you’re interested:

Via RootsAction: Hands off Sudan

Via Win Without War: Secure a ceasefire immediately

Via the American Friends Service Committee: Support an arms embargo and an immediate ceasefire

Via Avaaz: Evacuate Mazyouna from Gaza

Take care and have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

Upiko, “CROW”

It’s Monday again. Hi.

This week, I’m finishing my rewrites of Journey to the Water. I am planning to report back once I’ve done that with a release date. While I work on formatting and final edits, I can show you the cover and offer some tantalizing previews. Again, I truly appreciate your patience as I work to get this book into your hands.

If you’re waiting on a Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot deck, good news! As of the last Kickstarter missive (Saturday), the decks are now #22 in the printing queue! (I think they started in the mid-400s.) If you’re not waiting for one now, this also means that they’ll be available for sale soon. I’ll update you as soon as I know more.

Petitions I’ve gathered this week:

Via LeftClick: Support the Trans Bill of Rights

Via MPower Action: Tell Congress to Oppose H.R. 9495 (again)

Via USCPR: Block $20 billion in weapons to Israel

Take care of yourselves this week, and check back again soon!

Song of the Week

The Pretty Reckless, “Heaven Knows”

It’s Monday again. I’m so tired.

Scorpio Market 2024 was a lot of fun! It was nice to be back in Madison, and I met so many cool people. I look forward to going back! I also look forward to not having any markets for the rest of the year.

I am very close to being done with the rewrites of Journey to the Water, and when that happens, I’ll give you a release date. While I’m working on formatting, I can show you the cover and the first chapter. Thank you so much for your continued patience. I think the wait will be worth it.

If you’re struggling, I’ve got a post pinned over on Instagram with some support lines. Don’t give up without a fight. Don’t comply in advance.

And if you feel the need to stand up and be counted, here are some petitions:

Via Win Without War: Support a just migration policy

Via RootsAction: Hands off Sudan

Via Demand Progress: Stop the $20 billion weapons sale to Israel

Via EveryLibrary: Save libraries, stop Project 2025

I’m happy you’re here. I hope this week treats you well.

Song of the Week

All Them Witches, “L’Hotel Serein”

Good morning!

On Saturday, I’ll be at the Scorpio Market in Madison! The market runs from 12-4 and will take place at the Masonic Center downtown. Here’s some more information. It is a fully masked event!

In the meantime, I’ll be working on Journey to the Water. I’m trying to get through the election tomorrow (I’m working a full shift at a polling place), but after that I should be able to finish the rewrites and have a release date for you all.

On that note, DON’T FORGET TO VOTE. Don’t give up what little agency you have over your government. If you’re in Wisconsin, myvote.wi.gov has all the information you need in regards to checking your registration and finding your polling place. Wisconsin, among some other states, lets you register the same day at your polling place. If you’re elsewhere in the States (and its territories), here’s information on how, when, and where to vote and checking your registration.

If you’re not in the US, wish us luck, tomorrow and beyond.

Have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

Peter Gundry, “The Last Dance”

Hello!

I had a lovely time at both Milwaukee ParaCon and What the Hex, but now I am exhausted. Hello to everyone I met this past weekend! I’m happy you’re here. If you signed up for the newsletter, I’ll be adding your email to my mailing list as soon as I can move the cat off my box of convention things, and the newsletter will go out on the 31st.

I’ll be heading out to Fon du Lac, WI on Saturday for the Fall Spirit Fair! (Link takes you to the Facebook event). In the meantime, I’m working on Journey to the Water. I’m hoping for a November release (probably end of November), and I’ll have a release date for you soonish. Stop back later this week for more updates.

A couple of petitions for today:

Via Rep. Rashida Tlaib: End the occupation, begin the path to peace

Via USCPR: Block $20 billion in weapons to Israel

Via Our Revolution: Tell Biden to stop fueling Israel’s wars

May you have peace and comfort this week.
