Song of the Week

Paris Paloma, “Labour”

Good morning!

This is a very exciting week, because Part Three of The Book of the New Moon Door is starting! The first chapter will post on Patreon tomorrow. The latest chapter of Journey to the Water will be up here on Wednesday.

I am four chapters into my sprint to the end of The Book of the New Moon Door, so wish me luck as I continue that this week.

In other news, I’ll be at the What the Hex Witches’ Market, along with Brooke of the Figuratively Speaking Tarot, on Saturday, May 6! It will be open from noon to 6pm at Falcon Bowl in Milwaukee. Here’s a link to the Facebook event, and here’s one to the Instagram page. As soon as I find out our booth number, I’ll let you know!

As always, thank you for being here, and have an excellent week.

Song of the Week

Hozier and Bear McCreary, “Blood Upon the Snow” (from God of War: Ragnarök)

You know, I’ve never played a God of War game, but this song makes me want to.

That’s going to have to wait, however, because I’m starting Part Three of The Book of the New Moon Door! I’ll post a NaNo update on Friday. The last chapter of Part Two will be up here on Wednesday. There will also be a new chapter of Journey to the Water on Patreon tomorrow.

Responses to the New Moon Door poll were sparse and mixed, so I think I will maintain the chapter-by-chapter posting schedule for now. I’ll reevaluate when Part Three is written (my goal is by the end of May), and maybe again when editing is done (late summer). If all the chapters haven’t been posted by then, I may save the ending for the published book 😉

Also, I’ll make a bigger announcement later, but I’ll be at the What the Hex Witches’ Market on May 6 at Falcon Bowl in Milwaukee! Mostly, I’ll be supporting Brooke and her Figuratively Speaking Tarot, but I’ll have a few copies of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea to sell and sign and some bookmarks to hand out. Stay tuned for more details.

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Billie Marten, “Heavy Weather”

Good morning! It’s Monday again.

Bitchcraft Fair happened! I signed 20 books (18 of them for new readers) and handed out over 200 bookmarks. If you’re here from one of those things, welcome! It was so lovely to have the opportunity to talk about my book and meet some awesome people. My table partner, Brooke, did some great Tarot readings and sold quite a few of her beautiful cards. Here is her link.

Tomorrow, I’ll have a new chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door up on Patreon. We’ll be back to the usual posting schedule next week, and I appreciate your patience.

As always, thanks for being here, and have an excellent week.

Today’s the Day! Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee

Come see us at the Wisconsin Center, third floor, Hall B! Brooke of the Figuratively Speaking Tarot and I will be in Booth #116! There will also be trick-or-treating, costume photos, and concessions, as well as a TON of other makers and mystics for you to meet! More info, directions, and parking can be found here.

Journey to the Water Chapter XXI: Calm Seas

Journey to the Water cover image: three evergreen trees stand on a hillside, shrouded in bluish fog. Subtitle reads: the sequel to Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea.

Table of Contents

With the terrible book in my hands, I retraced my steps through the neglected garden and returned to the palace. A cold wind had come in from the sea as the sun set, and the strange warmth of the book’s leather binding cooled until it felt like the skin of a dead man. I considered throwing it from the ship as soon as I reached open water. I could only guess at its contents, but I was filled with the grim certainty that it was an evil book, and I would find no help in its pages that did not cost me my very soul.

Song of the Week

Barnaby Bright, “Highway 9”

Hello there! Happy Monday.

So, last week, we had a very large, very sickly tree removed from our yard. Unfortunately, while doing so, the tree service completely destroyed the majority of our garden. I was devastated and spent the week doing emotional yard work to clean up the damage and prepare for next spring (the fall harvest was ruined). This, and the resultant blisters and sore muscles, cut into my writing time last week, so there’s been a minor disruption to the posting schedule.

The latest chapter of Journey to the Water will be up here on Wednesday. There won’t be a new chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door until next week, and the upcoming episode of The Well Below the Valley has been pushed to November. For a while, I thought that I could get it out October 1 along with getting ready for Bitchcraft Fair and releasing the first chapter of The Tarot of the Gates at the same time, but I think that was too ambitious even before all this happened.

Speaking of Bitchcraft Fair, it is happening LESS THAN ONE WEEK FROM NOW. Here is a link where you can get tickets and find out more!

Also, the exciting preview of The Tarot of the Gates will be available October 1 as planned. You can go to my Instagram to find out about the setting and the accompanying deck!

I think that’s it for this week. Thank you for being patient with me, and if you’ll be in the Milwaukee area, I hope I’ll see you on Sunday!

Song of the Week

Annie Eve, “Bedtime”

Hello again! It’s Monday. Autumn has arrived early here, bringing a full day of rain and some minor flooding. While I wait for my towels to dry so I can sop up more water in my basement, how about an update for the week?

First things first: I have a new chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door that will be up on Patreon tomorrow, and the latest chapter of Journey to the Water will be here on the blog on Wednesday. Both projects will continue until they are done!

However, if you’re looking for something new and exciting, I have good news! My friend Brooke has recently published her first tarot deck, and we’re working on a collaborative book-and-deck project. I am excited to announce that both the (first?) book and the deck will be called The Tarot of the Gates. For more details and some worldbuilding, you can read last week’s post here. The first chapter will release October 1!

Also, in case you missed it, we’re going to be at booth 116 at Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee! It will be at the Wisconsin Center on Sunday, October 2. I hope to see you there! It’s my first event, and I am both excited and scared, as you can tell by all the exclamation points.

Take care and have an excellent week!

Bitchcraft Fair Update!

You will be able to find Space Whales Press and the Figuratively Speaking Tarot at booth 116!

We’re listed under Figuratively Speaking Tarot, because Brooke is the best and signed up for both of us and was very kind to invite me along.

A map of the Wisconsin Center Hall B, oriented with the entrance on the bottom, with a table highlighted on the far left, second from the top, with booths numbered 115-122. Text reads: Come see me at Booth #116! Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee, October 2nd 12pm to 6pm, The Wisconsin Center, Hall B
The map!

Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee takes place on Sunday, October 2nd (less than a month away!) at the Wisconsin Center. I will have books, and you can also bring a copy of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea you already own for me to sign! Also, you get to check out Brooke’s beautiful art. This is my very first event, and I’m both excited and scared.

Dessa, “Children’s Work”

Good morning! It’s Monday again.

Not much out of the ordinary happening in my world this week: I’ve got a new chapter of Journey to the Water scheduled to go up on Patreon tomorrow, and the latest chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door will be up on the blog Wednesday. I’m also working on the next episode of The Well Below the Valley, and that should be available September 1st.

I also want to remind you that you can come see me at Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee on October 2! Tickets are only $12 through the end of the month, and then become $15 through the day of the event. I will have limited-edition bookmarks to hand out and signed books to sell!

Thanks for being here. Have an excellent week.

The Civil Wars, “Sour Times” (Portishead cover)

Hello there. I guess it’s Monday again? Time is a soup.

Let’s see. I’m back on my normal posting schedule, so tomorrow, I’ll have a new chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door up on Patreon, and the latest chapter of Journey to the Water will be up here on Wednesday. Just so you know, dear reader, you are welcome to give me feedback on either of these projects! If you like them, or if you want to yell at me about them, comments are always open. This is your chance to affect the plot or save your favorite character from doom.

In other news, my bookmarks arrived!

Five bookmarks with the title Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea. From left to right: Eske in the boat against the lind-worm, Khalim doing magic, Aysulu doing horse archery, Eske against the salamander, Eske and Khalim. The reverse side is shown below, with the text "Space Whales Press: queer fantasy & weird tales for the people. Words by Madeline Crane, art by Brooke Marie Miller."

If you want one or more of them for your very own, you’ll have to stop by our table at Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee on October 2! I’ll update as soon as I know our booth number.

As I’m preparing for this and other, future events, streaming has been the proverbial plate that I’ve let drop. I’m hoping to either pick it back up or start a different project for YouTube (video essays?) soon. Also, I haven’t forgotten about the whole newsletter thing. I appreciate your patience.

I’m happy you’re here, and I hope you stop by again soon. Have an excellent week.
