Holiday Sale!

From now through the end of the year, you can purchase each of my books in paperback directly from the printer at a discounted rate!

Get Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea (super gay sword-and-sorcery) for $12/£10 (down from $14.99)

Get Journey to the Water (super gay sword-and-sorcery, part two) for $15/£12 (down from $19.99)

Get The Book of the New Moon Door (steampunk/Gothic horror/murder mystery) for $16/£14 (down from $20.99)

In addition to giving you the sale price, using these links also gives me a slightly better cut than I’d get from a retailer like Amazon. I hope this helps a bit with your holiday shopping!

Also, if the audio of The Book of the New Moon Door disappeared from your preferred audiobook source, it should be back shortly. There was an error in one of the files, and I believe I have fixed it.

Today’s the Day! The Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot has launched!

A spread of cards from the Figuratively Speaking Mermaid deck, with the text "Kickstarter is Live!!"

I am very excited to announce that my friend and business partner B. Miller has officially launched her Kickstarter for her mermaid deck! This is a full, traditional Tarot deck (plus a few extras) of handpainted watercolor art, a guidebook, and a basic box, all mermaid- and ocean-themed and sure to inspire and delight you. There are a few early-bird spots for discounted decks, and a very rare opportunity for you yourself to be added to the deck as a mermaid! As of this writing, the campaign is just shy of 50% of the way to its goal. I have pledged to support, and I highly recommend that you do, too. The deck is gorgeous and I can’t wait for you to see it. Here’s the link, where you can see all the reward tiers and all the cards.

The Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot!

Kickstarter coming soon: Figuratively Speaking Mermaid Tarot, painted by B. Miller

You may have already heard, but in case you haven’t, I am so excited to announce that my friend and business partner Brooke is almost complete with her SECOND full, traditional Tarot deck. This one is all about mermaids and other marine life, and it is gorgeously handpainted with expressive figures. I’ve been following her progress, and each card is an exquisite work of mood and meaning. You’ll have a wonderful time using it for divination or just looking at how pretty it is. I’ll be writing the deck guidebook, and I’m very honored to be a part of this project.

To get the deck into your hands, she’ll be running a Kickstarter campaign. Make sure you save the project so you get the notification when it launches! I don’t want you to miss out!

Must Be the Season of the Witch (October events)

Brooke and I are attending two markets next month!

The first is Bitchcraft Fair, which will take place Sunday, October 8 at the Wisconsin Center. Tickets are $12 in advance ($15 for the VIP skip-the-line experience) and $15 the day of–more here. In addition to shopping, this market offers trick-or-treating, a photobooth for your Halloween costumes (one picture is included!), and magical workshops! Doors open at noon and close at six.

The second is What the Hex Witches’ Market (Autumn Edition) on Sunday, October 22 at Dresden Castle on Underwood. Admission is free, and the workshops are magical and very affordable. There will also be live music and drag performers! Similarly, doors open at noon and close at six.

Brooke has a ton of new cards, and I’ll be opening preorders for The Book of the New Moon Door (more info on that here). We hope to see you at one or both markets!

P.S. I forgot to mention that the newsletter is going out tomorrow, so if you’d like to get in on that, put your email in the box at this link.

Song of the Week

Billie Eilish and Khalid, “lovely”

Happy Labor Day! In honor of workers past and present, I hope you find some rest today.

Because I don’t have enough projects (ignore the stacks of notes and half-finished drafts; those are my emotional support works in progress), I’m starting something new on Instagram (you can also see it on my Facebook page). My friend and collaborator Brooke started a project called #tarotember last year, wherein each day of September is focused on a different tarot card or suit. Last year, she painted the majority of her deck, the Figuratively Speaking Tarot, while I took some moody pictures and made a playlist.

This year’s Tarotember prompts

This year, I am introducing the universe for a new and as-yet-untitled project, a space opera set in a galaxy of warring kingdoms and palace intrigue, psychic pilot-knights and lost alien civilizations, and also queer romance and tarot themes! The first chapter, titled “The Knight of Ships,” will release on October 1, after the challenge concludes (and one day before Bitchcraft Fair Milwaukee!). Eventually, this project will be both a book and an accompanying deck, currently titled the Tarot of the Gates. Brooke has painted a few cards for it already, and while she works on other projects, I’m creating placeholder graphics for the challenge. Each day reveals more about the setting, so follow me on Instagram and/or Facebook for some new sci-fi/fantasy goodness.

Don’t worry, I am not abandoning any of my other projects! A new chapter of Journey to the Water will release tomorrow on Patreon, and the latest chapter of The Book of the New Moon Door will appear here on the blog on Wednesday. Also, in case you missed it, Episode 6 of The Well Below the Valley is available on Patreon as of September 1, and you can read a free preview here.

As a final note, Shepard is six months old today, and just as cute as ever:

A gray and orange tabby/tortoiseshell kitten sleeps on a tan and blue striped pillow, her head raised and her paws folded politely underneath her.
A rare moment when she’s sitting still enough for a picture.

I think that’s all for this week! Thanks for being here.

LOOK IT ME

I am officially a Goodreads Author! Shoutout to the Goodreads Librarians for being patient with me and adding my book! If you’re on Goodreads, feel free to add me as a friend or follow my profile, and don’t forget to leave a review of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea.

I love and appreciate you!

ETA: Forgot the link above. Also, this blog is now synced to Goodreads, so you can follow me there and not miss anything!

Back on Twitch!

A screenshot from the game Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, showing low-poly wooly mammoths stomping on some noodly people colored red and blue.

Tonight I’ll be streaming Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and talking about writing and reading fight scenes! They’re a particular challenge for me, so it should be an interesting conversation.

You can find me on the Tea and Sidequests channel tonight at 6pm (US Central time). I’ll be playing until around 8.

Not the post about reviews that I was intending to write

I had originally planned something much longer and cleverer than this, but things are Bad on all scales from the personal to the global, so this is what I’ve got.

Okay. Reviews. By now, you’ve probably gotten your copy of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea and maybe have had a chance to read it (no judgment; I either read books in a single day or over the course of several months, so I get how it is). I would love it if you would write a brief, honest review on the platform that suits you best.

Lots of people will tell you that leaving a review on a book helps boost it in the Amazon algorithm. I don’t know if that’s true; it seems like sales and clicks are the things that make the algorithms happy, but they’re inscrutable and threatening, so who knows. What reviews do is help readers who would like the book find it, and keep readers who wouldn’t like it from wasting their time and money. This is true whether the review rates the book one or five stars. I’ve read plenty of one-star reviews that make me want to read the book in question, because my taste is evidently the opposite of the reviewer’s.

Reviews are not for authors. The book is already published; if there’s a typographical error or misplaced comma on page 37, for instance, the author can’t go back and change it. They also can’t change major plot details or unsatisfying endings. You can give constructive criticism if you like, but the author can’t put it to use until the next book (or several books in the future, depending on when the review is published). Reviews are for helping readers to determine whether a book is a good investment of their time and money. What that looks like is entirely up to the individual reader.

There has been a lot of drama in the independent publishing world surrounding reviews, ranging from authors throwing social media tantrums to stalking reviewers and turning up at their homes to harass them. Given this history, I want you to feel safe and free of judgment if you choose to leave a review for my book. I can’t promise that I will never read your review, but I give you my word that I will never try to figure out who you are, doxx you, turn up at your house uninvited (some of you are my real-life friends, so I will turn up at your house eventually, but only for normal things), argue with your review on any platform, or even complain about it on social media. I’ve written this promise here on the Internet, where everything lasts forever, so you can hold me to it.

You also don’t owe me a review. All you owe me, if you choose to read my work, is to acquire it legally (purchasing it/getting it secondhand from a shop or a friend/borrowing from a library/reading it for free here on the website). I’d love it if you wrote a review–again, it helps new readers find my work–but you’ve got your own stuff going on. If you have the time and inclination, great. If not, I still appreciate you reading. You’re what makes this all worth it.

That’s my post about reviews. I’ll be back on Monday with a new Song of the Week. In the meantime, let’s voice our opposition to war, protect trans kids, and tell our pets we love them.

A snow-covered forest against an orange sunset.
It’s winter!
