Song of the Week

Heather Dale, “Joan”

Happy Monday!

It is less than a month until Midwinter Gaming Con, and I am busy preparing to GM Call of Cthulhu! If you’re interested in playing with me, there’s more information here.

There will be another chapter of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea up here on Wednesday, so I’ll see you then. Have a good week!

It had been a fine day, despite its inelegant start. Garvesh and Khalim had performed admirably, and the Iron Mountain team had maintained its lead. Aysulu would compete the next day, in the contests of skill, and she was confident that she would carry the day. Among the warriors assembled here, only the Tribe of the Lion and the Wolf had any reputation for horse archery. It would be a good test of her abilities before the time when she would face them on a real battlefield.

She found Jin facing a stand weighed down with dumplings, each filled with meat and spices. He pored over them, brows furrowed, as though they held some great mystery that he was required to puzzle out.

Song of the Week

Hozier, “Movement”

Happy Monday!

I’ll be busy this week preparing for Midwinter Gaming Convention and getting some more chapters of Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea ready for you. The next chapter will be up Wednesday. The Well Below the Valley is on hold until after the convention. If you’re interested in playing Call of Cthulhu with me, there’s more information and links here. I’m so excited and nervous to run this module again!

Have an excellent week!

Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea: Chapter VIII

In which Khalim makes himself known to the city, and a threat also reveals itself.

I parted from my companions for the afternoon and met Heishiro at the Flower of the Mountain to share a drink in the hours between the contest of poetry and that of magecraft, and passed the time there, trying to learn of the secrets of the eastern smiths. Heishiro was no craftsman himself, though he was an accomplished wielder of the weapons they made, and he could only give me a broad description of how steel was made. The tall stalks of grass that grew in his homeland and reached many times the height of a man were burned, and the charcoal left behind forged with iron to make a metal that was stronger and harder than any of the weapons and tools of my people. I asked him if I could replicate this process using what hardy plants and evergreen trees grew in the lands of my birth, and he told me he did not know.

I returned at sunset to find Khalim praying again, his bare feet slowly digging furrows into the sand under the first row of the stands as he paced. Darkness fell, and torches went up around the arena.

Midwinter Gaming Convention 2020!

As promised, here is my Very Exciting News: I will be running two Call of Cthulhu games at Midwinter Gaming Convention in January! This con takes place every year in downtown Milwaukee. We’ll be playing the first two chapters of my module, The Well Below the Valley. Part One will take place on Thursday, January 9th, at 5:30 pm, and Part Two will be Saturday, January 11th, also at 5:30 pm. Both games will be at Table 4 in the MacArthur Room. Tickets are free (you’ll need a convention badge), but there are only 5 slots per game, so if you want to play with me, get them fast!

Here is the event page for Part One.

Here is the event page for Part Two.

Here is where you can get convention badges.

To avoid spoilers, I will be hiding all the posts from Chapter One and Chapter Two of my module until after the con, but the introductory material will remain available. I also won’t be posting any new parts of the module, and will instead be updating Beyond the Frost-Cold Sea every week. We’ll resume with Chapter Three and the normal posting schedule the week of January 13.

I am so excited to host this game and look forward to playing with you!

Garbage, “As Heaven is Wide”

Happy Monday! It’s now December. This year has both been extremely long and flown by.

Last week, against all odds, I finished NaNo! I also received some Very Exciting News, which I promise I will actually tell everyone about soon.

In less exciting news, my sweet cat Odin was very sick last week. He seems to be back to his old self, but it was very scary there for a couple of days and he had to have a lot of tests done. If you have a few extra dollars and want to help me cover his vet costs, you can donate to my Ko-Fi, but please don’t feel obligated.

A black and white cat sleeps on a jeans-clad leg with his paws folded under his head.
He is a good boy with a very good face

I hope everyone has an excellent week.

NaNo Update: I did it!

Chapter Two: Green Grows the Lily (Part Three)

Table of Contents

The time of the summoning grows closer and closer. Can the investigators find the cult’s base of operations and stop the ritual?

I am in no way affiliated with Chaosium or the writers of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game system. Content notes for this chapter: kidnapping, murder, blood sacrifice, potential mob violence, eldritch horrors.)

Song of the Week

Phoebe Bridgers, “Motion Sickness”

Happy Monday! It’s the last week of NaNo! One of the first books I ever read, when I was learning to read, was The Little Engine That Could. I feel a bit like the train in that book: “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!” It’s amazing I still remember that mantra after so many years, and don’t remember stuff like…algebra.

I’ll be finishing up Chapter Two of The Well Below the Valley here on Wednesday. I hope you enjoy it; my players certainly did! They were thoroughly spooked and missed almost all the side plots in Chapter Three, they were so determined to stop the cult.

Some bad news in the Twitch department: my internet connection here isn’t strong enough to be able to stream live. It can more or less upload footage, but can’t do it in real time, which means that I won’t be able to interact with anyone in the chat. Streaming is going to be on hold until I can figure out how to fix it.

I hope everyone has an excellent week!

NaNo Update: For the first time this month, I’m actually not behind

37,590 words! I just have to keep this up for another week.
